How to use “Add Page Numbers to PDF”

  1. Add the PDF you want to number, or several: they are all numbered with the same settings.
  2. Choose the format (1, 2, 3 · Page 1 · 1 of 10), the font, the size and the margin.
  3. Pick the position on the grid and, if you like, skip the cover page or change the first number.
  4. Click “Add page numbers” and download the PDF, or all of them together in a ZIP if you numbered several.

Real text, not an image

Numbers are written as vector text with a standard PDF font (Helvetica, Times or Courier): they look sharp at any zoom, can be searched and barely add to the file size. Position and margin are measured on the page as it is displayed, so the number comes out straight on rotated or landscape pages too. The original content isn’t modified: the number is added on top.

Are my files uploaded?

No. ShiftAny Files processes your files directly on your device: this tool runs in your browser and never sends your files to any server.

Frequently asked questions

Can I number several PDFs at once?

Yes. Add as many as you want: they are numbered one after another with the same format, position and margin, and each number is placed according to the size of its own page. In the preview you can choose which PDF to view. If one fails, the rest are still numbered.

Can I leave the cover page unnumbered?

Yes. Tick “Skip the cover page”: the first page gets no number and numbering starts on the second one with the first number you set (1 by default; set 2 if you want the cover to count).

What does “1 of 10” mean?

Each page shows its number and the last number of the series, like “3 of 10”. If you change the first number, the total adjusts so the last page shows its real number.

Can I start from a different number?

Yes. Change the “First number”; it’s useful when the PDF continues another document (for example, to start at 25).

Can the number cover part of the document?

The number is written on top of the page, at the distance from the edge you choose. If your document has text right at the edge, increase the margin or change the position.
